Production process and operation of coconut shell activated carbon

Coconut shell activated carbon is a highly efficient adsorbent material made from coconut shells. It possesses a large specific surface area and abundant microporous structure, effectively removing harmful substances from air and water. The production process of coconut shell activated carbon is relatively simple, and it is popular due to its low cost and environmentally friendly characteristics.

The production principle of coconut shell activated carbon

The production principle of coconut shell activated carbon is based on the microporous structure and adsorption properties of the coconut shell. The production of coconut shell activated carbon involves two processes: carbonization and activation.

Carbonization Process: First, coconut shell fragments are placed in a high-temperature furnace for carbonization. Carbonization refers to the process where, at high temperatures, the organic matter inside the coconut shell reacts and transforms into a high-carbon solid material. This process is called dry distillation, which decomposes the organic matter inside the coconut shell through instantaneous heating, generating tar and gases, thus forming preliminary coconut shell charcoal.

Activation Process: The carbonized coconut shell charcoal is rough with a relatively small surface area. Therefore, during the activation process, it is necessary to further increase its specific surface area and porosity. Activating agents generally use steam or chemical activators, which, through a series of physical adsorption and chemical reactions, further increase the porosity of the coconut shell charcoal. The activated product is coconut shell activated carbon.

Production process of coconut shell activated carbon

Coconut Shell Collection: First, collect fresh coconut shells, selecting high-quality shells, preferably those that have undergone cleaning.

Washing and Crushing: Thoroughly wash the coconut shells with clean water and crush them into granular material suitable for making activated carbon.

Carbonization: Place the washed and crushed coconut shells in a high-temperature furnace for carbonization. Control the appropriate temperature and time to convert the organic matter within the coconut shells into carbonaceous material.

Crude Carbon Purification: Wash and purify the carbonized crude carbon to remove impurities.

Activation: Place the crude carbon in an activation furnace and activate it with steam or add chemical activators under appropriate conditions to increase its porosity and specific surface area.

Refined Carbon Purification: Wash and purify the activated coconut shell carbon again to achieve a higher purity.

Drying and Packaging: Dry the refined carbon and package it appropriately for storage and transportation.

Coconut shell activated carbon is relatively simple to produce and has low cost and environmentally friendly characteristics. It has wide applications in air purification, water treatment, healthcare, and food processing. When using coconut shell activated carbon, we need to select appropriate production methods and activation conditions according to different needs to obtain the required adsorption performance.
