Coconut shell activated carbon is widely used in the wet metallurgical process of gold mining, especially in the carbon slurry method and carbon leaching method. It is currently the most mainstream adsorption material in the field of gold extraction. Its wide application is mainly attributed to its unique physical structure and suitable surface chemical properties.

The coconut shell activated carbon has a hard texture and demonstrates outstanding wear resistance under high-intensity operations such as pulp agitation, pumping, and thermal regeneration. This not only significantly reduces the loss rate of the carbon but also minimizes the loss of gold due to carbon powdering, thereby effectively controlling operating costs.

2. Advanced microporous structure

In the cyanide leaching system, gold exists in an anionic form, with a kinetic diameter of approximately 0.5–0.6 nm. Coconut shell activated carbon mainly consists of micropores, and the pore size distribution is highly matched with the size of the gold cyanide complex, which is conducive to achieving efficient physical adsorption.

3. High specific surface area

The specific surface area of coconut shell activated carbon typically ranges from 1000 to 1500 m²/g, providing a large number of adsorption sites that can efficiently concentrate gold ions in the solution.

4. Moderate surface oxygen-containing functional groups

The surface of this material contains an appropriate amount of carboxyl groups, hydroxyl groups, and other oxygen-containing groups, which endows the carbon surface with moderate polarity. This helps to enhance the affinity for polar complexes such as [Au(CN)2]¯ and improve the adsorption selectivity.

5. Excellent chemical stability

In strong alkaline and cyanide-containing leaching environments, coconut shell activated carbon exhibits outstanding chemical inertness, and is unlikely to undergo structural damage or side reactions, ensuring long-term stable adsorption performance.
