Three common tests to evaluate the quality of coconut shell activated carbon
Currently, there are numerous types of coconut shell activated carbon on the market, with varying quality. So how can one scientifically evaluate the quality of these products? Three commonly used physical property testing methods—bulk density, mechanical strength, and float rate—are generally effective. These methods are relatively simple to perform and can effectively reflect the basic quality of activated carbon.
1. Packing Density
Packing density refers to the mass of activated carbon per unit volume. The common measurement method is as follows: Take a sample of coconut shell activated carbon and compact it according to the standard procedure into a 100 mL graduated cylinder. Weigh the mass of the sample, and then calculate the mass per unit volume. Under the same raw materials and production processes, packing density is usually inversely related to the adsorption performance: a high packing density may indicate a denser particle structure and relatively fewer accessible micropores, thereby affecting the adsorption capacity; however, at the same time, a high density often means a more solid particle structure and better mechanical properties. Therefore, packing density is an important indicator for evaluating the comprehensive quality of coconut shell activated carbon and is widely used in production and trade acceptance.
II. Strength
Strength is used to measure the wear resistance and fragmentation resistance of coconut shell activated carbon. During the test, a certain amount of activated carbon samples are placed together with stainless steel grinding balls in a dedicated drum. The samples are rotated and impacted according to the standard procedure. After the test, the samples are sieved and the percentage of particles remaining on the specified sieve is calculated, which represents the strength value (in percent). The higher the strength, the less the product is prone to pulverization during transportation, filling and use, and it has less dust and a longer lifespan.
III. Flocculation Rate
The flocculation rate is used to measure the sedimentation performance of coconut shell activated carbon in water. The testing method is as follows: take the dried activated carbon sample and add it to a container filled with a certain amount of water. Mix thoroughly and let it stand for 10–30 minutes. Remove the particles floating on the surface and dry and weigh them. Calculate the proportion of the weight of the floating particles to the original sample weight, which is the flocculation rate. High-quality coconut shell activated carbon, due to its thorough carbonization and dense structure, usually has a lower flocculation rate. A high flocculation rate may indicate incomplete carbonization, loose structure, or the presence of light impurities. Such products are prone to floating and affecting the usage effect in water purification and liquid-phase adsorption.
The packing density, strength and floatation rate, although not fully representing the adsorption performance of activated carbon, can be used as a quick and low-cost screening method to effectively determine the processing quality and application suitability of coconut shell activated carbon.
