Gold Extraction from Coconut Shell Activated Carbon

The history of gold refining is a microcosm of human materials science. From the ancient pyrometallurgical process to the modern cyanidation process, each technological advancement has been accompanied by increased efficiency and reduced costs.

Traditional gold extraction often employs the zinc powder displacement method, but this method suffers from unstable recovery rates and significant impact from impurities. In the 1970s, South African gold mines pioneered the use of activated carbon to extract gold from cyanide solutions, unexpectedly discovering that its adsorption efficiency far exceeded expectations. This accidental discovery, however, triggered a revolution across the entire industry.

One gram of high-quality activated carbon has a specific surface area of up to 3,000 square meters—equivalent to the size of a standard basketball court. This complex network of micropores, mesopores, and macropores provides countless "docks" for gold-cyanide complexes. Even more ingeniously, the surface of activated carbon undergoes special treatment to selectively adsorb precious metals such as gold and silver, while remaining "blind" to other impurity metals.

Today, carbon-in-pulp (CIP) and carbon-leaching processes have become the mainstream technologies for gold mining worldwide. In a huge stirred tank, gold-bearing ore is in continuous contact with activated carbon, and the gold element is quietly "captured." In the subsequent desorption process, through high-temperature and high-pressure sodium hydroxide and sodium cyanide solutions, the gold is "released" from the activated carbon and enters the electrolytic cell, eventually precipitating as high-purity gold mud. This process not only improves the gold recovery rate but also significantly reduces energy and chemical consumption.

Guangyuan Carbon continuously researches and develops new technologies, with each innovation pointing to the same goal: improving your gold recovery rate. We closely follow the needs of the mining industry, focusing our efforts on improving the wear resistance and adsorption selectivity of activated carbon. Choosing Guangyuan means choosing more advanced technology to capture more value from every ton of ore slurry.
